St Nicholas Priory, Exeter

An Ancient building in the middle of Exeter. This location has plenty of history that creeps out of the wood work. An uneasy tension descends once the sun sets especially in the cold damp crypt

About the Event

About St Nicholas Priory

The Priory was originally a Benedictine Monastery. Founded in 1087 it provided hospitality to pilgrims rich and poor.

The monastery, Gifted lands and property in the 12th & 13th Century set about building monastic buildings, where they lived an important and lively life until 1536 when King Henry VIII began the Dissolution, when the majority of the buildings were torn down and left behind.

Somewhere between 1575 and 1602 the Priory began its life as an Elizabethan town house. Very much loved and lived in for at least a century before it became a mixture of houses and small businesses. This is how it remained until the Edwardian era, it was given a face lift and returned to five smart homes. Finally, in 1913 the Exeter Corporation saw the historical value of the building and decided to restore it to its original and beautiful monastic design.

Stuck, frozen in time St Nicholas priory can’t help but attract its former residents’ home. Dwelling among original artefacts, gazing up at vaulted ceilings it feels as if they are continuing on with their lives as if time had not touched them.

Join us as we explore St Nicholas. We tug at the threads of a time forgotten by the living.
